The Barnacle Turns Your Windshield Into a Giant Parking Ticket

This is KYW’s Ian Bush. It doesn’t get much more conspicuous than
THIS new parking enforcement tool that turns your windshield into one big parking ticket. It’s the product of a Philadelphia native
who says it’s designed to help enforcers and violators alike. Dougherty: “Three-and-a-half feet across,
about two feet tall, right there in front of everybody.” The appropriate response when seeing the Barnacle
is: ‘what the…?’ Dougherty: “The Barnacle definitely gets your
attention.” Its bright yellow plastic is visible from
more than a block away. What you can’t see, says Kevin Dougherty,
is ANYTHING from the front seat of your car. Dougherty: “It attaches to the windshield
using commercial-grade suction cups that provide 750lbs of force per suction cup. There is no brute force way of getting it
off.” The Barnacle is placed by a parking enforcement
officer, but it’s removable by YOU — once you cover the cost of the violation. Dougherty: “It’s got a motorist-release feature
which allows people to pay over the phone, enter a code, release the device themselves,
and drop it off within 24 hours to a predetermined location.” The Drexel grad and former Marine heads Ideas
That Stick, which launched the Barnacle this summer. It’s being used in Allentown and a couple
other cities where Dougherty says parking authorities are drawn to its light weight,
stackability, and safe installation. Ian Bush, KYW Newsradio
